mma Watson is the latest Hollywood starlet rumored to be attached to the upcoming film adaptation of the international best seller, Fifty Shades of Grey. With Fifty Shades, of course, such rumors are even more intense than usual given the highly erotic nature of the story and the characters. Although other A-List actresses like Angelina Jolie have been mentioned as possibilities for the leading role of Anastasia Steele, Watson’s rumor is more credible simply because she is the appropriate age for the character. Jolie would likely not be believable as a character who is written as a recent college graduate.
Watson, however, was quick to dismiss the rumors, pointing out that stories like this are extremely common even though there is rarely any truth to them. "There are so many movies you become attached to when I’ve literally never even received a phone call," she told Entertainment Weekly. "It was the same way with The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo – I never even saw a script!"
And while Emma Watson would certainly be an interesting choice for one of the most anticipated roles in recent film history, it’s probably more likely that a lesser known actress will be chosen. It may be hard for movie-goers to envision well-known actresses playing a role that has already taken on such an iconic stature for those who have read the books. In much the same way that a little-known Kristen Stewart became the lead character in the Twilight Saga and Mara Rooney actually became "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo", these roles are often better for actresses who are not already associated with major film roles.
